EDITH
CAVELL. Partly Printed Autograph Document Signed, no place
[probably Brussels, Belgium], 6 November 1910. In French. 1 page, 4"
x 7".
A rare
document signed by this British nurse who was an Allied heroine in World
War I. Edith Cavell became matron of the Berkendael Institute of Brussels
in 1907, and she established there the first modern training school
for nurses in Belgium. In 1914, after the Germans occupied that country,
Cavell turned the institute into a Red Cross hospital. She also became
involved in an underground group that helped Allied soldiers escape
from Belgium, and in 1915, she was arrested by the Germans for this
activity and was convicted and executed as a spy.
This
attractively-printed form is a receipt which Cavell has filled in and
signed, noting a payment made by Madame Crabbe for the care of Madame
Deleus, presumably at the Berkendael Institute. Cavell has signed at
the lower right, "E. Cavell / Directrice."
The document
is in fine condition, and is an attractive piece for display. $1000.00
