CLARENCE
DARROW. Signed Photograph, no place, no date.
A scarce signed photograph of Clarence Darrow, the celebrated American
trial lawyer who defended many unpopular clients in his long career,
ranging from labor leaders and political radicals to murder defendants.
Among Darrow’s more notable cases were his defenses of Socialist
leader Eugene Debs, labor leader "Big Bill" Haywood, the murderers
Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, and John T. Scopes, charged with violating
a state law against the teaching of evolution in the famous “Scopes
Monkey Trial.”
This 9" x 7", black-and-white, candid photograph shows Darrow
in his later years, full-length, striding away from what may be a courthouse,
towards the camera. He is wearing a three-piece suit and a hat, and
is smiling. He has signed the photo in the lower right corner, “Clarence
Darrow / To Robert Gros.” Gros was a San Francisco businessman
involved in civic and international affairs.
The left margin of the photo has been slightly trimmed, not affecting
the image or inscription at all. The piece is in very good condition
overall.
Signed photos of Darrow are uncommon, and this is an attractive, candid
image, with a dark, clear signature. $2500.00
