Ulysses
S. Grant, the Union general who secured the North's victory in the Civil
War, served two terms as President, from 4 March 1869 through 4 March
1877. He signed this document during his final week in that office.
The piece
is an authorization for the Secretary of State to affix the seal of
the U.S. to "a Warrant for the pardon of Samuel Campbell."
Grant has signed at the lower right ("U. S. Grant"),
and his signature is dark and clear.
