FRANCIS
R. LUBBOCK. Autograph Document Signed, no place [Texas],
27 June 1838. ½ page, 10" x 8".
A Texas businessman and politician, Francis Lubbock was elected Governor
in 1861, and during his two years in office, he vigorously supported
the Confederate war effort. He then served in the Confederate army,
and in 1864, became an advisor to Jefferson Davis on trans-Mississippi
affairs. At the war’s end, Lubbock was with Davis when he fled
Richmond and was captured along with him.
Lubbock originally settled in Texas in 1836, when it was an independent
republic, and just two years later, when he penned this document, he
had already been appointed comptroller of the Texas treasury and become
involved in several businesses. Here Lubbock gives a power of attorney
for a stock transfer. “Know all men by these presents,” he writes, “that I have this day appointed and made W D &
R M Lee my true & lawful attorney to transfer on the Books of the
Stock Commission and Comptroller Certificates numbered from 1837 to
1848 inclusive in all 12 Certificates of $100 ea to Wm M Beal –
and the Stock Commission will please attend to the same.” He has signed, “F. R. Lubbock,” at the conclusion,
and has dated the piece. Two witnesses have also signed at the lower
left.
A few marginal fold breaks are repaired on the verso; the document is
otherwise in very good condition. $500.00
