THE PLUMMER CARILLON AT THE MAYO CLINIC

CHARLES H. MAYO. Typed Letter Signed to W. G. Rice, Rochester, MN, 19 March 1928. 1 page, 10½" x 7¾", on his personal stationery.

Like his brother William (1861-1939), Charles Mayo (1865-1939) was an important American surgeon. In their Rochester, Minnesota, practice, the two studied and adopted progressive surgical and laboratory techniques, developed an influential model of group medical care, and established an important educational program. Together, the brothers founded the Mayo Clinic and the Mayo Foundation for Medical Research and Education.

In the late 1920's, the Plummer Building was erected at the Mayo Clinic, and it included a carillon tower which, at the time of its construction, was the tallest building in Minnesota. The original bells for the Plummer or Rochester Carillon came from a foundry in England, and the carillon was dedicated on 16 September 1928.

Charles Mayo writes here about the import duties owed on this carillon. He informs his correspondent, rather curtly, “I understand there was a duty of about $13,000 on the carillon we got, but this was included in the manufacturers price to us and they agreed to look after everything.” He has signed, “C. H. Mayo.”

There are a few staple holes in the top blank margin, but the letter is otherwise in very good condition. $250.00
