THOMAS
McKEAN. Partly
Engraved Document Signed as Governor of Pennsylvania, no place, 12 November
1804. 1 page, 12¾" x 21", on vellum.
A Signer
of the Declaration of Independence from Delaware, Thomas McKean was
a delegate to the Continental Congress throughout the Revolution, serving
as President of that body in 1781. He eventually settled in Pennsylvania,
where he served as Chief Justice (1777-99) and then as Governor (1799-1808)
of the state.
This
attractive Pennsylvania land grant, engraved along the top with decorative
lettering and a vignette of the state seal, awards a tract in Manheim
township called "Greenpark," containing some 240
acres, to Henry Reeser. McKean has signed at the top left, and his signature
is strong and dark. Just below this is a large, intact state seal in
paper over wax.
The document
is in fine condition. There is a minute hole along one fold in a blank
area, and there is some trifling soiling. Overall, the piece is clean
and fresh-looking, with an excellent signature and seal. $550.00

This
vellum document has a uniform background color, which is best shown
in the closeup below;
in the illustration of the complete document, above,
the dark areas at the margins are just shadows in the photograph.
