REMBRANDT
PEALE. Autograph Letter Signed to William Childs, Baltimore,
MD, 1 January 1823. 1 page, 8" x 5", plus integral address
leaf.
This
American artist, a son of Charles Willson Peale, is best-known for his
many portraits of major American and European figures, including George
Washington and Thomas Jefferson. In this letter, Rembrandt Peale gives
up his pew at a Baltimore church. "As it is incumbent on me
to lessen the unnecessary weight of expences in my family, it is my
duty at the commencement of another Year to inform you that I give up
the Pew which I have occupied in the 1st Independent Church,"
Peale comments. "This I intended to have done last Year on
account of the coldness of its situation. I am sorry I cannot, with
this notice, settle for the Pew rent due, but shall not neglect to do
so as soon as I possibly can."
In 1814, Peale
had settled in Baltimore where he established both a gallery and a natural
history museum. He eventually turned the museum over to one of his brothers,
and in 1823, the year of this note, he left Baltimore for New York City.
The letter
is in fine condition. $900.00
