ROOSEVELT. Typed
Letter Signed as First Lady to Uncle Fred[eric A. Delano], Washington
[DC], 1 September 1937. 1 page, 9¼” x 6”, on White

An uncommon
family letter, mentioning her mother-in-law, from Eleanor Roosevelt,
the First Lady, humanitarian, and diplomat who was known for her many
social welfare and reform interests.
Addressing
an uncle, Roosevelt explains, “A letter from Mr. Charles A.
Harris, of Hanover, Massachusetts, has come to Mama. I am quoting this
excerpt from it, and will you please let the gentleman know whether
or not the property is for sale.” She then quotes Harris’s
inquiry about “‘the old building which for years has
been in the Delano family, at the foot of Washington Street, at the
head of the wharf. It adjoins the former residence of my grandfather....
I should like to obtain the price asked for the property if it is for
sale.’” She concludes, “Affectionately yours,”
and signs in full, “Eleanor Roosevelt.” “Mama”
is FDR’s mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt.
The letter
contains a number of pencil notations by the recipient (or an assistant),
including one just below Mrs. Roosevelt’s signature, stating,
“FAD wrote Mr. Harris twice about this matter.”
It is otherwise in very good condition. $250.00
