WILLIAM
HOWARD TAFT. Typed Letter Signed as U.S. Solicitor General
to Calderon Carlisle, Washington, DC, 12 March 1891. 1 page, 10"
x 8", on Department of Justice letterhead.
A future President and Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, William
H. Taft served as U.S. Solicitor General from 1890-92. While in that
post, he wrote this letter to an attorney regarding the papers in a
pending lawsuit.
Taft explains that a judge in Alaska has just reported by telegram that
"‘Proper return will go by mail...about March fifteenth,
and should reach you by April first’.... As soon as the papers
come," Taft continues, "I shall notify you, and send
you the acknowledgment of service of the rule.
"I beg to acknowledge the receipt from you," he adds,
"of a half-dozen copies each of your brief in reply and additional
brief, and to thank you for the same." He has signed, "Wm.
H. Taft."
The letter is in very good condition. An unusually early letter from
Taft whose letters as Solicitor General are uncommon. $350.00
