A Civil
War-date document signed by the Union general who is known as the "Rock
of Chickamauga" for his heroic stand at that site in September
1863. George H. Thomas led the Army of the Cumberland for the rest of
the war, rendering important service in the battle of Chattanooga, in
the campaign against Atlanta, and at Nashville, Tennessee. He is considered,
along with Grant and Sherman, one of "the triumvirate who won the
war for the Union" (Warner, Generals in Blue, p. 500).
This
document is an Assistant Quartermaster's Report from January 1863, detailing
the employment and pay of three men hired as clerk, forage master, and
teamster. Thomas has signed the large document at the lower left, approving
the report, adding his rank of Major General, U.S. Volunteers.
