GEORGE H. THOMAS. Partly Printed Document Signed, no place, January 1863. 1 page, 13" x 16½".

A Civil War-date document signed by the Union general who is known as the "Rock of Chickamauga" for his heroic stand at that site in September 1863. George H. Thomas led the Army of the Cumberland for the rest of the war, rendering important service in the battle of Chattanooga, in the campaign against Atlanta, and at Nashville, Tennessee. He is considered, along with Grant and Sherman, one of "the triumvirate who won the war for the Union" (Warner, Generals in Blue, p. 500).

This document is an Assistant Quartermaster's Report from January 1863, detailing the employment and pay of three men hired as clerk, forage master, and teamster. Thomas has signed the large document at the lower left, approving the report, adding his rank of Major General, U.S. Volunteers.

The document is in fine condition. $750.00

This image shows only a part of the document with Thomas's signature.
