BESS
W. TRUMAN. Typed
Letter Signed as First Lady to Mrs. K. S. Axtater, Washington, DC, 23
June 1948. 1 page, 9¼" x 6", on White House stationery.
Writing
in the year her husband would be re-elected to the Presidency, Bess
Truman expresses her regret that she was unable to meet an old acquaintance
when visiting in California recently.
"Unfortunately
your letter was not given to me until I was on the train leaving Los
Angeles," the First Lady explains. "It would have
been a pleasure to have seen you again and to have talked of mutual
friends in Missouri. This is my first opportunity to acknowledge your
note and to tell you that I am very sorry I was not able to see you
while I was in Los Angeles...." She has signed, "Bess
W. Truman," and her signature is large and dark.
The letter
is in fine condition, accompanied by the original White House envelope.
