FRANÇOIS
ARAGO. French physicist noted for his research on the properties
of light; as a government official, he was responsible for the abolition
of slavery in French colonies. Signature, no place, 20 January 1843.
On a 1" x 5" paper. This signature, cut from the conclusion
of a letter, reads, "Veuillez agréer, monsieur, ma plus
haute considération / F. Arago / le 20 janvier 1843."
The signature is in very good condition, neatly mounted to an 8"
x 5½" paper. A scarce autograph. $100.00

P. BRADLEY. U.S. Supreme Court Justice, 1870-92. Signature,
no place, no date [1870-92]. On a 2½" x 4" card. He
has signed, "Joseph P. Bradley / Justice Supreme / Court U.S.,"
on this card. The card is in very good condition. $75.00
DAVID
J. BREWER. U.S. Supreme Court Justice, 1889-1910. Signature,
no place, 7 February 1891. On a 2¼" x 4" card. He has
signed, "David J. Brewer / Associate Justice Sup. Ct. / U.S.
Feby 7th, 1891." The card is in very good condition. $75.00
WILLIAM
G. BROWNLOW. Methodist preacher; Tennessee newspaper editor
and politician, called the "Fighting Parson." Signature, no
place, no date. On a 2" x 3½" paper. He has signed,
"W. G. Brownlow," on this small sheet. The piece
is in very good condition. $35.00
JOHN
BURROUGHS. American naturalist and author. Signature, no place,
28 March 1888. On a 2¼" x 3¾" card. He has signed,
"John Burroughs / March 28, 1888." The card is in

JOSEPH
CHAMBERLAIN. British politician and reformer; father of Austen
and Neville Chamberlain. Signature, no place, May 1891. On a 2¼"
x 3¼" card. He has signed, "J. Chamberlain / May
1891." The card is in very good condition. $25.00
NOAH
DAVIS. New York attorney noted for his opposition to the Tweed
Ring both as U.S. district attorney in New York and as the state Supreme
Court justice who presided at the trials of "Boss" Tweed.
Signature, New York, NY, February 1889. On a 2½" x 3½"
card. He has signed this card, "With compliments / of Noah
Davis / New York Feby 1889." The card is in fine condition.

IGNATIUS
DONNELLY. American author, social reformer, and politician.
Signature, no place, 27 June 1889. On a 2" x 3½" card.
He has signed, "Very respy yrs: / Ignatius Donnelly / June
27, 1889." The card is in very good condition. $25.00
CYRUS
W. FIELD. American financier who was responsible for the laying
of the first Atlantic telegraph cable. Signature, no place, no date.
On a 2¼" x 3¾" card. He has signed, "Cyrus
W. Field," in the center of the card. There is a bit of soiling,
but the card is in good condition overall. $50.00
JOHN
B. FLOYD. Confederate general who was U.S. Secretary of War,
1857-60, under James Buchanan. Free Frank Signature, no place [Washington,
DC], no date [17 March 1859]. On a 3" x 5¼" envelope.
He has penned his free frank as Secretary of War, "J. B. Floyd,"
in the upper right corner of this envelope, which is addressed in a
clerical hand. The Washington postmark dates the piece. The piece is
in very good condition. $75.00
MELVILLE
W. FULLER. Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, 1888-1910.
Signature, no place, no date. On a 2¼" x 3¾"
card. He has signed, "M. W. Fuller," at the center
of the card. The card is in very good condition. $100.00
ALBERT
GALLATIN. U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, 1801-14, under Thomas
Jefferson and James Madison; also a diplomat, banker, and scholar. Signature,
no place, no date. On a 2¼" x 4½" paper. This
is the conclusion of a Letter Signed, with the closing in a clerical
hand. Gallatin has then penned a full signature, "Albert Gallatin."
The piece is in very good condition. $65.00

GEORGE. American economist noted for his single tax on land
theory. Signature, no place, no date. On a 2¼" x 3¾"
card. He has signed, "Henry George," in the center
of the card. The card is in very good condition. $25.00
HORACE
GRAY. U.S. Supreme Court Justice, 1882-1902. Signature, no
place, no date. On a 2¼" x 4" card. He has signed,
"Horace Gray," at the center of the card. The card
has very slight soiling, but is in very good condition overall. $65.00

MARSHALL HARLAN. U.S. Supreme Court Justice, 1877-1911. Signature,
no place, no date. On a 1½" x 3½" paper. A signature,
probably cut from the conclusion of a letter, reading, "Yrs
/ John M. Harlan." The paper is in very good condition, mounted
to a slightly larger sheet. $50.00

E. JOHNSTON. Confederate general. Signature, no place, no date.
On a 2½" x 4" card. He has signed, "J. E.
Johnston," at the center of the card. The card has minor soiling,
but is in very good condition overall with a very dark signature. $300.00

OSKAR KOKOSCHKA. Austrian painter and dramatist; leading exponent
of Expressionism. Signature, no place, no date. On a 6" x 6"
album leaf. He has signed, “Oskar Kokoschka,” in
dark blue ink near the center of this large album leaf. In the lower
left corner, well away from the signature, is a small notation, written
in another hand, giving his nationality and date of birth. The piece
is in fine condition. $100.00
JAMES
RUSSELL LOWELL. American poet, essayist, and diplomat. Signature,
no place, 7 January 1888. On a 2¼" x 3¾" card.
He has signed, "Faithfully yours / J. R. Lowell / 7th Jan:
1888." The card is in very good condition. $30.00
GUGLIELMO
MARCONI. Italian physicist and Nobel Prize winner, noted for
his work with wireless telegraphy. Signature, no place, no date. On
a 2" x 3½" card. He has signed, "G. Marconi."
The card has some toning from prior framing, which could be matted out;
Marconi's signature is dark and clear. $250.00
STANLEY
MATTHEWS. U.S. Supreme Court Justice, 1881-89. Signature, no
place, no date. On a 2¼" x 3¾" card. He has
signed, "Stanley Matthews," at the center of the
card. The card is in very good condition. $65.00
JOHN
T. MORGAN. Confederate brigadier general who was U.S. Senator
from Alabama from 1877-1907. Signature, no place, 26 January 1891. On
a 2¼" x 3¾" card. He has signed this card, "Jno.
T. Morgan," adding his home state of Alabama and the date.
The card is in very good condition. $75.00
JULIUS
STERLING MORTON. Founder of Arbor Day; U.S. Secretary of Agriculture,
1893-97, in Grover Cleveland’s second term. Signature, no place,
14 April 1893. On a 2½" x 3½" card. Appropriately,
this card has an image of a tree and the phrase "Plant Trees"
printed on it; Morton has signed just below this, "J. Sterling
Morton." His title as Secretary of Agriculture and the date
of 14 April 1893 are neatly added in another hand just beneath his signature.
The card is in very good condition. $45.00
LEVI
P. MORTON. U.S. Vice President, 1889-93, during Benjamin Harrison's
administration. Signature, no place, 1888. On a 2" x 3¾"
card. He has signed this card, "Levi P. Morton,"
and dated it in the year he ran for and was elected Vice President.
The card is in very good condition. $50.00

D. PORTER. Union naval officer. Signature, no place, no date
[after1870]. On a 2½" x 4" card. He has signed, "David
D. Porter / Admiral," adding the rank he was given in 1870.

ELEANOR ROOSEVELT. First Lady, reformer, diplomat. Signature
on a White House Card, Washington, DC, no date [1933-1945]. On a 2¾"
x 4¼" card. She has signed, “Eleanor Roosevelt,”
at the center of this card that is imprinted “The White House
/ Washington” in the upper right corner. The card is in fine
condition. $175.00
PHILIP
H. SHERIDAN. Union general and cavalry commander. Signature,
no place, no date [1864-69]. On a 2" x 3½" card. He
has signed, "Phil. H. Sheridan / Maj Genl / U.S.A.,"
as Major General, a rank he held from November 1864 through March 1869.
There is a crease in the blank upper right corner of the card; otherwise,
the piece is in very good condition. $275.00
PHILIP
H. SHERIDAN. Signature, no place, no date [1869-88]. On a 2¼"
x 3¾" card. He has signed, "P. H. Sheridan / Lt
General," as Lieutenant General, a rank he held from 1869
to 1888. The card is in very good condition. $275.00

ELIZABETH CADY STANTON. One of the principal leaders of the
woman suffrage movement in the U.S. Signature, New York, 26 March 1874.
On a 2¼" x 3½" card. She has signed in full,
"Elizabeth Cady Stanton," at the center of this card
and has added the place and date underneath. The card is in fine condition.

MARTIN VAN BUREN. U.S. President who also served in the Senate,
as Secretary of State, and as Vice President. Free Frank Signature,
no place [Kinderhook, NY], no date. On a 3½" x 4½"
address panel. Van Buren has addressed this piece to an individual in
Washington, DC, and has written "Free / M. Van Buren"
in the upper right corner. The panel bears a red, Kinderhook NY circular
datestamp (the date is unclear) and a red handstamped "Free."
Only the address panel is present; this has slight marginal soiling
and wear, but it is in very good condition, with Van Buren's writing
dark and clear. $400.00
ANTHONY
WAYNE. One of the best Continental Army generals, "Mad
Anthony" Wayne served throughout the Revolution. Free Frank Signature,
no place [Virginia], no date [12 July 1781]. With an Autograph Docket
by ROBERT MORRIS. On a 7½" x 9" address
leaf. Wayne was fighting in Virginia along with Lafayette at this date.
This address leaf is addressed to Robert Morris, then the U.S. Superintendant
of Finance, in Philadelphia. Wayne has penned his free frank, "Anty
Wayne," at the lower left corner of the address panel. The
panel is marked, "public service," at the upper right.
There is a docket in Morris’s hand along one edge of the sheet
reading, "Virginia 12 July 1781 / Genl Wayne / Battle near
James River;" that battle was a preliminary to the Yorktown
campaign. Alas, Wayne’s letter does not accompany this leaf, but
this is still a scarce Revolutionary War frank. The leaf has some staining
and fold wear and old paper repairs to seal tears and to one other small
loss in a blank area. Wayne’s signature is dark and clear, and
the piece is in good-very good condition overall. $1200.00
WILLIAM
C. WHITNEY. American financier, sportsman, and politician;
U.S. Secretary of the Navy, 1885-89, in Grover Cleveland’s first
term. Signature, Washington, DC, no date [1885-89]. On a 2½"
x 4½" Navy Department card. This card is imprinted, "Navy
Department / Washington," at the upper right. Whitney has
signed, "W. C. Whitney," in the center. The card
is in very good condition. $35.00
